Dr Kim Howells on Penywaun Online

Labour MP for Pontypridd, and Minister of State for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Dr Kim Howells, attended the University of Glamorgan this month as a guest of the University’s Student Law Society. Dr Howells was raised and schooled in Penywaun. Speaking about human rights, Dr Howells gave an insight into his experiences as a Minister of State.

He spoke in particular about the issue of returning individuals in the UK to their country of origin, in circumstances where there is a risk of their being tortured or killed on their return. The British Government has pursued a policy of seeking assurances from the country to which the individual is to be returned that their treatment will be in accordance with human rights standards.

Staff and students were intrigued by Dr Howell’s tales of tricky negotiations in the Middle East.

Head of the Law School, Professor Stuckey, said, “We are thrilled to have welcomed Dr Howells to Glamorgan. He gave an engaging speech and I’m sure that each of the students that attended was able to benefit from his wealth of knowledge”.
